Chioggia Beets are a visually stunning heirloom variety from the coastal town of Chioggia in northern Italy. Known for their unique candy-striped roots—red and white concentric rings—they’re as beautiful as they are delicious. Sweet, tender, and mild, these beets retain their vivid color best when roasted whole or served raw. The tops are also edible, with bright green leaves and pink-striped stems.

Beets have been cultivated for thousands of years across the Mediterranean and Europe. This variety arrived in the U.S. around 1865 and quickly became a garden favorite for both its culinary and ornamental appeal. Perfect for spring and fall planting, Chioggia thrives in cool weather and loose, fertile soil.

Why We Love It:
• Eye-catching red-and-white bullseye pattern
• Naturally sweet with a smooth texture
• Dual harvest: roots and greens
• Excellent for roasting, pickling, and raw salads
• Long-lasting storage potential in root cellars

Planting + Growing Tips:
• Sow seeds directly outdoors 2–4 weeks before last spring frost or 6–8 weeks before fall frost
• Plant ½" deep, 1" apart in rows spaced 12–18"
• Thin seedlings to 3" apart for proper root development
• Germinates in 5–10 days at soil temps between 50–75°F
• Prefers full sun and rich, well-drained soil
• Harvest when roots are smooth and about 2–3" wide

Harvest + Storage:
• Gently loosen soil and pull roots when mature
• Separate tops and rinse both before storing
• Store roots in a cool, dry place for several weeks
• Tops can be refrigerated and used within a few days
• For extended storage, bury in sawdust or sand in a root cellar

• Growing instructions included on each seed packet
