A timeless Mediterranean herb with bold fragrance and flavor, Rosemary is as beautiful as it is useful. Its upright, evergreen growth makes it perfect for borders, pots, and kitchen gardens. With needle-like leaves and delicate blue blooms, rosemary brings structure to garden beds and incredible aroma to everything from roasted vegetables to homemade bread.
A slow starter from seed, but worth the wait—rosemary is drought-tolerant, perennial in mild climates, and an anchor in any herb garden.
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
Rosemary requires a little patience to start, but once established, it thrives with minimal care and offers year-round rewards in zones 7 and up.
Pollinator Friendly:
• Attracts bees
• Supports butterflies
• Blooms offer early-season nectar
Planting & Care Details:
• Light: Full Sun
• Plant Height: 24–36"
• Spacing: 12–24" apart
• Watering: Low once established; do not overwater
• Soil: Well-drained, sandy or loamy
• Frost Tolerance: Perennial in Zones 7–11; overwinter indoors in colder zones
• Zones: 5–11 (tender in cold climates)
GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Sow indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost. Surface-sow or lightly press seeds into moist soil. Keep warm (70–75°F) and be patient—germination can take 14–28 days. Transplant when seedlings are 3–4" tall and weather has warmed.
TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
• Provide plenty of light during germination and growth
• Allow soil to dry slightly between waterings
• Prune often to encourage bushy growth
• Grow in pots if overwintering indoors
Culinary & Garden Uses:
Fresh or dried, rosemary adds bold, piney flavor to meats, vegetables, and breads. Its oils are also used in natural cleaning, spa products, and floral arrangements.
